Concrete Aalto Bookend
The Concrete Aalto Bookend is inspired by an edition of concrete doorstops created by designer/artist/provocateur Tobias Wong in 2003. The mold for each doorstop was the famous Savoy vase designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in 1937. To release the doorstop from the mold he had to break the vase.
The notion of destroying an icon of modern design - a not-inexpensive object requiring great skill to create - to produce something decidedly more prosaic seemed such a drastic undertaking, but the resulting Doorstop was also pretty incredible.
Last year we decided to create our own version using the smallest of the Aalto Savoy vases to make a Bookend. It is part homage and part objet.
Each Concrete Aalto Bookend is hand-cast in molds that were made by breaking actual Aalto vases. Every one is slightly different.
